Cerberus breathed deeply of the winter night’s air, cold and crisp and stinging his nose in a delightful way. When he huffed out a breath it steamed in the air, billowing like smoke before fading away. The night was beautiful, with the green ribbons of the aurora dancing overhead, and the full moon illuminating the freshly fallen snow in silver light. There was a hush to the night, the sound swallowed up, while every crunch of snow under his paws seemed unnaturally loud by comparison. Underneath the eternal dance of the stars, trees glistened with ice that bowed their branches, and not even the night birds called out into the peaceful night. In fact, the only sign of life in the entire clearing he found himself in was the tokota by his side, her blue coat changing abruptly to white halfway down her body. She caught him looking and wagged her tail, leaning close for a moment to press her shoulder into his. Even she was unwilling to break the silence of the moment, simply enjoying
[Transcript of audio log recovered from [redacted]] [Doctor Richard Westin, referred to hereafter as Dr. Westin]: “Day One. We have received our first specimen today, a recently deceased female, standard build. Specimen measures 175 cm at the withers, weighing 385.54 kg. For accuracy’s sake, specimen has no special mane type, but outwardly presents lilac coloring. Genetic sequencing will be done for completeness. Specimen appears to have expired due to severe lacerations from bear claws. Anecdotally, I believe that the specimen died defending her handler from a wild bear. I’m told the handler survived with severe injuries. [heavy sigh] If this succeeds, perhaps we can reunite them. If the serum works, well...I hope it works. We’ve worked too long on this to have it fail now when we’re right on the cusp of greatness. To do what we’re planning to do...the sacrifices will be worth it. I know they will.” [Audio ends] [Audio begins] [Dr. Westin}: “Day Two. I have the surgical
Waiting in the Passport Office lobby was actually not as bad as Lumi had feared when she first heard her handler’s plan. Oh, word had gotten around and everyone was excited by the prospect of sailing beyond Tokotna to see what the world was offering. Her human, Ferus, had been personally asked to sign up for the expedition, and as the first tokota to join his pack, he had chosen to take Lumi along with him. She had maybe been a little smug as Karhu pouted in his house, but she couldn’t help but be excited, wiggling in place and her tail wagging non-stop since they had sat down. They were at the mercy of a paper ticket in her human’s hand, waiting to be called for their turn. But Ferus had other humans to talk to, and there were plenty of other tokotas here as well. Lumi had promised herself she would be on her best behavior, since she didn’t want Ferus to regret bringing her along. He had debated between her and Karhu for this, and the big, serious dire tokota would leap at the
The night was crisp and beautiful, a full moon illuminating the forest in a silvery glow. A cool wind blew, making the leaves whisper and dance on the ends of their branches, a few fluttering downward in a gentle shower. The weather was absolutely gorgeous, and Ferus Olan was incredibly grateful he had chosen to take one of his newer packmates out to experience such a wonderful evening. Usul was a younger male, shy and gentle-hearted, and Ferus wanted a chance to properly bond with the young tokota. Riding to and from a costume party, just the two of them, seemed like a great opportunity. Usul wore no costume himself, the black tokota’s markings making him almost invisible in the night. If Ferus dismounted at that point, he was entirely certain that only the reflective tape on his saddle would help him find Usul again. Ferus, however, had decided on a simple, store-bought costume to wear for the night’s festivities. In all honesty, he had forgotten about the party until it was
